Kimi’s Secret by John Hudspith
Chapters 1&2
Completed by Austin, Marie, Kimberly, Meghan and Aaron from English 7
Austin:
I really liked the first 2 chapters. I like Kim but I’m not sure why exactly. The opening was very strange and weird and I wanted to hear more. Sometimes it made me laugh. I definitely want to hear more.
Marie:
I really enjoyed the first 2 chapters. I like Kimi because she’s a bit like me. The bit at the beginning I didn’t really understand what was going on but I could see it in my head. I definitely want to hear more and I like the weird words in the story.
Kimberly:
I really liked the beginning of the story. I like Kimi because she has a name like mine. I was a bit shocked at the swearing. If I spoke to my mum like that I’d get a row. I want to hear much more.
Meghan:
I like it. I really like Kimi. She is a typical teenager and is like me. I didn’t get how the opening paragraph fits with the rest of the story – what does it have to do with Kimi and a secret? I laughed when she started swearing. That’s what people do in real life – even children. I want to hear more but I like it best when it’s about Kimi. I don’t like the weird stuff so much. I wonder why you picked the name Kimi and why you picked a crow and not another animal?
Aaron:
I love this book. I like Kimi and the talking crow. I really want to hear more. So far I love the awesome choice of powers that Kimi has. I love the blasting of the bliss flies and the monkey at the shed. (note from Mrs S – Aaron has gone slightly ahead in his feedback – he’s so enthusiastic he had great difficulty keeping his critique to the first 2 chapters.)

Why we think other children would enjoy ‘Kimi’s Secret’
By the Portree Kids
I would recommend this book to anyone over ten – not younger than that because it’s quite scary. It’s very funny in places and it is very imaginative, with the tulpas, blissflies and famoose. Kimi is fourteen years of age and there are loads of different characters. I give it 10 out of 10. (Kimberly)
Kimi is a typical 14 year old girl that doesn’t know her parents are balancers. Her parents go to a meeting at the golf course and get hit by lightning. They are presumed dead. So if you like action, gory bits, yucky bits and some fun, then I recommend this book for you – it’s a great read. (Jade)
On the home world of Kimi’s parents, which is Heart, there are creatures like blissflies, Bellamy’s aunts and famoose. There are also weird powers – like lightning from fingertips, people splitting and shifting. Then there is transport by twirlies. If you like mysterious super powers and creatures from other worlds you’ll love Kimi’s Secret. (Aaron)
I think Kimi’s Secret is the best book I’ve ever heard or read in my life. It is fairytale like. The first part is set in Mousehole in Cornwall but then the action moves to the other world of Heart. Kimi is taken to Heart by her Tulpa, Bentley. He takes her to the town of Middling and guides her through the story. The book is amazing and I award it 10000 out of 10! (Austin)
I think Kimi’s Secret is a great, funny and imaginative book. I like the comedy the most but there’s plenty action too. I would recommend the book to 11 to 14 year olds. As you get further on in the story it gets funnier, yuckier and scarier. (David)
In Kimi’s Secret you can expect to find great characters, a great combination of action and comedy with lots of LOLs (laugh out loud moments) and a breathtaking adventure. (Andrew)
I recommend Kimi’s Secret to 10 to 13 year olds, I thought it was great. It’s a fantasy story. Kimi is from Mousehole in Cornwall. She’s a likeable girl who goes through a life changing event at the start. Things get weird when she meets her Tulpa and goes to the other world of Heart. READ IT and you’ll see what I’m talking about! :) :) (Meghan)
Kimi’s Secret is a very good book. I would recommend it to anyone over the age of 11. It is a sort of fairy tale. It has sad bits and happy bits and bits where you feel like your heart will fall out of your mouth! It is very imaginative and I would read it if I were you. (Marie)

Kimi’s a typical teenager and is like me. I wonder why he picked the name Kimi? (Meghan)
I love the awesome choice of powers Kimi has. (Aaron)
I really like Kimi. I’d like to be like her. I wish the book would get published – I want to get my own copy. (Jade)
I don’t mind that Kimi’s a girl. I thought I’d like a boy hero better but now I’ve heard a bit I’ve changed my mind. There’s a lot for boys in the story too. And I like Kimi. I like how there’s a mixture of fun and action. (Andrew)
I definitely want to hear more. I like the weird words in the story. (Marie)
The opening was very strange and weird. Sometimes the story makes me laugh. I want to hear more. I have learned a new word that I like – it’s discombobulated. Mrs Stormont says it’s one of her favourite words. (Austin)
Kimi is soooooo cool, because she’s a bit like me in the way she acts and talks. (Rhiannon)
I like Bentley. I think a Tulpa’s like a guardian. (Lauren)
I think Kimi’s been to Heart before. Heart has the same letters in it as Earth. (Aileas)
I think Kimi was taken to Heart just after she was born. The bit with the car outside the house was so scary. (Kaitlin)
I really like the book. I think Kimi had deja- vu when she got to Heart. (Kirsty)
I love the idea of a twirly. I think the book gets better as you go on. (Kayleigh)
I’m enjoying this book – it’s clever and funny.. I liked when Bentley arrived. He looks after Kimi. (Daniel)
It’s very clever. I like how things you don’t expect come up. (Calum)
